The California Public Utilities Commision is wrong.

They are wrong because they are going to asess a new tax that will fund an institute that will look for ways to curb California’s global warming output. Now some of you might say, but Robert global warming is an incredible problem and we must do all we can to stop it, and I couldn’t agree more however this is not the PUC’s job and that is why I object.

It is my understanding (and I could be wrong) that their job is to “regulate privately-owned utilities in the state of California, including electric power, telecommunications, natural gas, water and transportation companies. In addition, the commission regulates household goods movers and rail crossing safety.” thanks wikipedia, their job is not to develop new technology no matter how noble the goal.

We have a California Air Resources Board for that.

I believe the climate crisis is possibly the number one threat to our planet, but this is not the way to solve it. The PUC should do its job, and quit taxing residents of this state for research and development that is outside the scope of the agency.

For more you can read an article at the LA Times.

Just now it came to my attention that today marks the 10 year anniversary of what was effectively the dawn of The Mozilla Project, the non profit that brought us such gems as firefox, thunderbird, camino (mac only), and many more projects based off of any one of their apps (flock anyone?).

We sit on the eve of firefox 3, (I’m using the beta build right now to post this from) and looking back on the last ten years online for myself personally it’s incredible. I used netscape back then but soon moved on to IE not knowing how derided and detested it would end up being for various reasons by those the world over myself included.

Without firefox I would have viable alternatives in browsers like Konqueror for Linux, Opera and heck even Safari for Windows but I would not be as satisfied as I am now.

I felt I wanted to write something to mark this day, not as a way to say Happy Birthday to firefox or to congratulate them on the last ten years but rather to wish them success over the next ten.

Hopefully market share can be gained and Microsoft can finally be pushed to support web standards, who knows maybe in ten years Internet Explorer will have gone the way of Mosaic, at the least we will be done with IE6 (Thank god).

“The civil libertarians among us would rather defend the constitution than protect our nation’s security.”

That wouldn’t be terribly alarming if it came from the likes of Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity or others of that ilk like Rush Limbaugh but no it came from United States senator Jeff Sessions from Alabama in regards to the debate surrounding the FISA bill before the senate.

Now I will keep myself from going on a rant and just finish this post with a merging of a couple famous quotes from great historical figures.

We can not defend freedom abroad by deserting it at home, if we give up a little of our freedom for a little safety we will have neither ultimately.

If you don’t know what FISA is, then get educated from @ wiki

Oh and thanks digg, and thanks UnamericanRevolution

Three young men in Jackson County Indiana said they were so freaked out when ‘propositioned’ by Aaron Hall on April 12th, that they proceeded to beat the 100 pound, 5’4 man for hours, using their fists, boots, dragging him down a staircase while his head slammed into each step, and then throwing him in a ditch and leaving. Aaron managed to crawl out of the ditch and out into a nearby field, where he died, alone and naked.
