Recently grooveshark underwent a major face lift making it a much sleeker, sexier and altogether easier to use service. That’s all well and good but they also moved around the url that is used when making a search query. Which means if you’re searching from the browser’s search function in any modern browser your search will go nowhere.

That is until now.

To fix this slight glitch that I am sure grooveshark itself will fix shortly you first need to find your user profile, if you don’t know where this folder is located heres mozilla to show you how depending on your operating system.

Now from that folder go to the searchplugins folder (note there is one other searchplugins folder where the default search engines are, this is not what you want however).

Now you should see some xml files, possibly many but more likely just a few. Locate the grooveshark.xml folder and open it in either a code editor or just a simple text editor.

What you will be presented with looks like a lot of garbage to the computer illiterate, but this is in fact just xml code. Don’t be discouraged the fix is really simple, just copy and paste one line in and you’re done.

Now scroll to the bottom (or do a search for template= and highlight everything inside the quotes, but not the quotes themselves, and paste in this line
"http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/search/?query={searchTerms}"

Now all you need to do is restart firefox and your searches of grooveshark should work perfectly

Just now it came to my attention that today marks the 10 year anniversary of what was effectively the dawn of The Mozilla Project, the non profit that brought us such gems as firefox, thunderbird, camino (mac only), and many more projects based off of any one of their apps (flock anyone?).

We sit on the eve of firefox 3, (I’m using the beta build right now to post this from) and looking back on the last ten years online for myself personally it’s incredible. I used netscape back then but soon moved on to IE not knowing how derided and detested it would end up being for various reasons by those the world over myself included.

Without firefox I would have viable alternatives in browsers like Konqueror for Linux, Opera and heck even Safari for Windows but I would not be as satisfied as I am now.

I felt I wanted to write something to mark this day, not as a way to say Happy Birthday to firefox or to congratulate them on the last ten years but rather to wish them success over the next ten.

Hopefully market share can be gained and Microsoft can finally be pushed to support web standards, who knows maybe in ten years Internet Explorer will have gone the way of Mosaic, at the least we will be done with IE6 (Thank god).

With all that said this is the story of how SitePoint tried to give Internet Explorer a fighting chance … and it lost anyway.

As anyone who knows me at all will tell you, I am a firefox devotee, and since the other day I had portable firefox issues and lost all add ons. With that in mind, and since I am stuck on my homework for the moment I figured I would detail my firefox set up on my laptop, so not only will I have a reference as to what I use in case I need it at work, but also so anyone else can see what I use and possibly adopt these extensions as well.

So now without further ado and in alphabetical order are my themes and add ons used.

themes

super mario bros 3 theme

add ons

I use adblock plus not really to block ads, although I will use it to block really annoying ads but rather I use it to block annoying flash apps, I know there are other great flash blockers out there but since this add on works so well I stick with it. cooliris previews is something I have considered getting rid of actually, it is a great add on but something that at times can be annoying, it allows you to see basically a floating frame when hovering over a link and in that frame is the page the link would send you to, it is a wonderfully well done add on but I find myself asking, why do I really need it?

I use del.icio.us classic to tag my links and upload them to my del.icio.us account and once I finish editing my bookmarks I might switch to the regular del.icio.us add on.
download statusbar is honestly something I rarely use any more, I keep it around because at times when downloading large files it will keep me up to date on how far along the download is and how much time is left. farkit is a site specific add on, used on fark.com in their commenting forums, if you don’t visit the site you don’t need this, but if you do then this add on is invaluable. forecastfox is used to track the current weather conditions and the 5 day forecast, it also is a great resource when weather warnings are issued.

fotofox, I honestly don’t know how I got this add on, I think I saw it in a list, but since I have the flickr uploadr I don’t need fotofox and I am sorry to say that beause it looks like a strong add on. The foxmarks bookmark synchronizer allows me to keep one set of bookmarks on any computer I use that has firefox and the add on installed, I use it constantly with my work copy of the aforementioned portable firefox. I use the gmail notifier to keep track of my emails and it has proved to be an invaluable and highly customizable resource.

google preview brings image previews to google search results via a small screenshot next to the result on the page, I honestly can not imagine google without this I use the add on so often. For those pesky sites where Internet Explorer has to be used IEtab allows you to easily load a page inside firefox using the IE engine, I use it often for way too many reasons to mention, but it proves especially invaluable when designing a web page and I want to see how it will appear in IE. I use the screen grab! add on to take screen shots of the current web page, and I absolutely love it. I can take shots from the whole page, the visible portion of the page, or just a certain selection of the page then redirect the output to the clipboard or to a file. Simply put it does a small task extraordinarily well.

smart digg button is a site specific extention that allows me to submit a new site to digg or simply digg an article via a box in the firefox status bar, I don’t use it a ton but I do find it to be very useful. tinyURL creator can be used on any web page to quickly convert the current webpages url to a tinyURL link, it takes a mundane task and makes it seamless, simple and easy, I like it. tweetbar is a firefox sidebar extention that allows viewing of tweets and posting of new tweets all from the firefox sidebar, I don’t use it a ton but it is well done, and if you don’t mind here is my twitter account.

That’s my firefox set up, exciting isn’t it?

This is just part 1 of what I figure will be a many many part series.

Ok right now it’s late and I just managed to fix a problem with IE and it took me hours to find the simplest problem so this will be a lot of bitching, moaning, and general sleep deprived randomness.

Here’s the deal, I recently redid my page, making it much more manageable and in some respects making it much easier on the eyes, is it perfect? No, but is it better than some I would like to think so.

Previously I had turned some long unordered lists into basically a mini javascript app. I have a bunch of info on various topics stored in some arrays and have programmed in methods to display those arrays, pretty simple. The code was written for a drop down box but I had taken care before to write the code so that it easily could be tweaked to work with text links instead.

So, I tweak the code to display text links, the links display, but the arrays the links are supposed to lead you to won’t display, well correction they won’t display in IE. Firefox has no problems, Opera has no problems, and even Safari for Windows has no problems. Still however IE is the problem child. I try to use it’s built in error console but to no avail as it sends me on a while goose chase.

Fast forward a couple hours right as I am about to head to bed, I remember I have a few for loops and many a time I have had some strange bug occur when I attempt to have 2 for loops with the same variable name, even if they are local variables and they are out of scope. Turns out that’s not the problem.

So right as I am going to head to bed a few minutes ago, I decide to check one last time, and I discover the problem that IE had but no one else does. I use an h1 tag to present a subset of the array data, and to allow manipulation of that heading tag I gave it the identifier “title”, turns out IE didn’t like that and would abort when the programmer designed their javascript this way.

I wouldn’t mind this if the problem was universal, since all browsers use the same javascript environment, but no IE has to always do something that no one else does. Countless times this occurs, it even occurs in my new wordpress theme I am just finishing up, just for IE I have to use an unnecessary center tag just to center the content since apparently IE sometimes has probs with margin: auto.

I hate to be one of those people who is constantly hating on microsoft since I do like a lot of what they do, but their browser is ripe with these bugs. Here’s to hoping firefox, opera and safari make some significant gains, we need another big browser out there to force microsoft to stop being lazy. We also need to get the web user to “rediscover the web” and start using a newer browser, any of the ones I mentioned are simply put more fun than IE.
